De AKG K72 is een betaalbare, comfortabele studiohoofdtelefoon met een lange kabel en lichtgewicht ontwerp. De geluidskwaliteit is redelijk voor deze prijsklasse, maar het middengebied klinkt wat dof en minder helder, wat vooral bij zang en instrumenten opvalt. De geluidsisolatie is matig omdat de oorkussens niet altijd goed afsluiten, zeker bij brildragers. De vaste kabel is handig in de studio, maar minder praktisch voor mobiel gebruik. De bouwkwaliteit is grotendeels van plastic, waardoor de hoofdtelefoon minder robuust aanvoelt. Voor wie een goedkope, comfortabele hoofdtelefoon zoekt voor tracking of algemeen gebruik, is dit een goede keuze, maar voor kritisch mixen zijn er betere alternatieven.

They may not have been expensive, but what good is it if they don't have bass? I might not know much about this; I'm an amateur, making music as a hobby in Ableton Live, and I've only recently been using these headphones. In the final mix, I boost the bass because there's not enough of it with the reference K72 headphones, and what's the result? The music mixed this way sounds terrible on another audio source because there's way too much bass, dominating the entire project. It's a trap... This is a serious problem for me; I'm not happy with these headphones. They're basically useless.

Without being exceptional, these headphones do the job, reproducing bass very well even at low amplification. Although it's not dramatic, I was a little disappointed with the highs, which were crushed by midrange that was a little too powerful.
