De Audio-Technica ATH-M40x biedt een neutrale en gebalanceerde geluidsweergave, wat hem geschikt maakt voor studiowerk en kritisch luisteren. De bouwkwaliteit is stevig voor deze prijsklasse, al is er veel plastic gebruikt. De afneembare kabels zijn handig en verlengen de levensduur, maar het eigen kabelsysteem maakt vervanging duurder. De oorkussens zitten comfortabel, maar kunnen warm worden en slijten relatief snel. Geluidsisolatie is matig, waardoor deze koptelefoon minder geschikt is voor gebruik in drukke of lawaaierige omgevingen. Over het algemeen is de M40x een goede keuze voor wie op zoek is naar een betaalbare, betrouwbare studiokoptelefoon, maar er zijn duidelijke compromissen op comfort en duurzaamheid.

After using my other pair for studio mixing and mastering, bought this as a gift for somebody. I have 7 pairs of headphones, some are big names costing thousands of dollars, yet I always come back to these for reliable mixes. They are not perfect but to me the most balanced of them all, enough detail to mix and master, nothing is overblown everything clear, stereo separation good and I do not need to make changes after the mix. They do sit quite tight and can make your ears feel hot after a few hours which is still ok with me because I know what I am hearing is accurate. These are really genuine studio headphones and not just something marketed as that, well worth it. My other pair is used daily now for 2 years and is like new still where others fell apart after 6 months so yes absolutely a no brainer buying these.

Have owned the M50X in the past and this time tried the M40X to add an extra headphone in the studio. The sound quality is good for its price, going for a cheaper product has not left me disappointed and I'm cautious about budget headphones. It works fine as an extra headphone for studio instrument playing or travel music listening. The drivers don't seem very sensitive, you need to push the device output volume up a fair way to get decent loudness
