Riverbond | PS4

Riverbond is a game that feels as if it were meant to be part of a larger and more ambitious world. It’s great for jumping into a quick game to feed your hack and slash needs throughout the day, but with no in-game saves, no perks for skins collected, and a world that offers no room for real exploration, I find it hard to want to play with four friends because the enemies aren’t challenging enough. Coupled by an imbalance in weapon damage and objectives that don’t fit the style of play, I'd say Riverbond doesn't stand out in a genre that's already crowded. — T.K. Hale

Riverbond is an absolutely gorgeous game with a mesmerizing voxel aesthetic. It has a lot of charming aspects, and there is also no denying its hack-n-slash dungeon crawling is fun. However, it seems to be missing something that keeps all its elements from gelling together. Ultimately, the game becomes fun in spurts, but playing it for too long can feel a bit tedious.

Riverbond biedt een laagdrempelige ‘shoot and slash dungeon crawler’, die vrij eentonig is en weinig uitdaging biedt als je alleen speelt. De grote variatie aan vijanden is prima en de game ziet er goed uit, maar dat zorgt er niet voor dat de game bovengemiddeld scoort op singleplayer vlak. Riverbond weet dat in de coöp multiplayer wel te doen, doordat je hier om de meeste punten strijdt waar de simpele gameplay zich prima voor leent. Helaas is deze modus alleen lokaal te spelen en niet online. Riverbond is dus een titel voor gamers die samen met vrienden/vriendinnen op de bank tegen elkaar willen spelen of iemand die een jong familielid wil introduceren tot de wereld van gaming.

Review: Riverbond – Tijdens de E3 werd Minecraft: Dungeons aangekondigd. Dit is een game die gebruik maakt van de voxel graphics van Minecraft, maar daar een dungeon crawler omheen bouwt. Deze titel zal in de lente van 2020 uitkomen. Met populaire games zie je vaak dat er nadien games uitkomen die er erg op lijken, maar nu is het andersom. Riverbond is een indietitel, die ook gebruik maakt van voxel graphics en hack ‘n slash gameplay met hele lichte RPG-invloeden. De vraag is dus of de uitstap van de Minecraft-franchise al overbodig is voordat de game überhaupt op de markt is verschenen.

Games in 2019 are more complex than ever before. Gameplay modes, synergy between mechanics and abilities, multiple endings, it can all get a little much. That is why Riverbond stands out. It’s simple but a great deal of fun at the same time. It offers up only a few things but it does those few things well. Despite that simplicity, the team behind the game keeps things fresh with new weapons, locations and enemies for long enough to make Riverbond and enjoyable and laid-back dungeon crawler.
