Sonic Forces biedt een mix van snelle actie en karakter aanpassing, maar kampt met tegenstrijdige kwaliteit. De grootste sterkte is de uitgebreide character creator waarmee spelers hun eigen Sonic personage kunnen maken en aanpassen. Visueel is het spel indrukwekkend met kleurrijke omgevingen en uitstekende art direction, ondersteund door een gedenkwaardige soundtrack. Het missiesysteem voegt herhaalwaarde toe. Echter, de speelduur is teleurstellend kort met levels die te snel voorbij zijn. Het level design wordt als saai ervaren, vooral in avatar stages. Technisch presteert de standaard Xbox One versie matig met slechts 720p resolutie. Modern Sonic levels nemen te vaak de controle van de speler weg, wat frustrerend kan zijn. Voor fans die nostalgie zoeken is het een redelijke ervaring, maar het haalt niet het niveau van Sonic Mania of Generations.
