Mario Tennis Open op de 3DS biedt snelle, toegankelijke tennisactie met veel bekende Mario-personages en kleurrijke banen. De game is vooral leuk met vrienden dankzij de vele multiplayer-mogelijkheden, zowel lokaal als online. De besturing is soepel en er zijn verschillende opties, waaronder gyroscoop-ondersteuning. Voor singleplayer is de inhoud echter beperkt: er ontbreekt een diepgaande RPG-modus en de uitdaging is vooral in het begin laag. Online zijn er geen leaderboards of toernooien en soms is er sprake van lag. Grafisch is het vrolijk, maar niet altijd gedetailleerd. Voor wie vooral met anderen wil spelen, is het een vermakelijke keuze, maar solo-spelers kunnen snel uitgekeken raken.
