Disney Planes (Import)

Dusty Crophopper (Cook), a humble crop-duster of the kind that once strafed Cary Grant, dreams of something bigger and better beyond his humble home. Tipping his wings, he sets out to find it.

Another very good animated movie from Disney, this time modeled after Cars but with Planes. As the movie moved on I got more and more into it and feel I will love it even more the next time I view it. You get excellent PQ & AQ as expected with Disney. A little short at an actual playing time before credits of only 1:22. Extra content is less than 1 hour but a DVD copy and online Digital Copy are included. This is not as great as the full fledged Pixar movies but a notch below and great still.

'Bland' and 'cynical' aren't words we ever expected to find ourselves using when reviewing a Pixar film. But then we never imagined that the studio would release anything as crass and merchandise-motivated as this Cars spin-off. Still, this Blu-ray release is an absolute knock-out thanks to its dazzling AVC 1.78:1 1080p transfer and precision-engineered DTS-HD MA 7.1 mix. Best of all though is the inclusion of the award-winning Mickey Mouse short Croissant de triomphe in addition to all of the extras from the US release (which is a turn up for the books).

it's pretty obvious that Planes is Cars retooled. The plot is similar to Cars in every way. The difference is Planes lacks the heart that the first Cars held. Not to say Planes isn't a total waste but its not all that great either. It will hold the attention span of a 7yr old, while you as the parent take a 90 min nap. Disney's blu shines with a pristine colorful PQ presentation. Audio is a near perfect 7.1 DTS track. Extra's are small but effective. Bottom line a nice companion piece to Cars and low and behold a sequel: Planes: Fire & Rescue will be out in 2014.....

Planes is an easy movie to hate, but if you put aside any preconceived notions about it based on negative critic and user reviews, it's not a total disaster. The animation is excellent, it moves along quickly and there are even a few modest chuckles to be had. But it is clearly time for Disney to leave the Cars universe and get back to telling fresh and imaginative stories.
