We have had this unit since 2012. We attached it to our horses breakaway halter and they run around on hundreds of acres of rough terrain. Through thick trees it consistently tracks well over 1000 yards and down into draws. If they are over 1000 yards and way down in a canyon, then you can lose their exact location, but you know where they went down. So for four years we've used it every day for 7 months of the year. The horse rubs his head, tears off the halter, and the collar unit looks like it's been in a war zone, but works perfectly. Finally after four years the collar unit's battery is getting weak and the range started to diminish. We called Garmin and they are sending us a new battery FOR FREE! We purchased the unit directly from Garmin. Amazing product. It's a good idea to regularly go through the calibration cycle on the handheld unit. It only takes 20 seconds.

My son handles dogs for my hunting club. I purchased this so he could keep up better. It worked as expected. Range and effectiveness were good. My one concern/issue was that the system was incomplete without the addition of topo maps for my area which came at an added cost. We were expecting this after talking to other hunting club members but had we not a costly surprise would have been in our future.
